Jane Fulton Alt Mourning Light #3 2003 Gelatin silver print, Edition of 20
8 x 8 inches
From the series: Mourning Light
Night seeps into day,
Childhood into adulthood,
Birth into death,
What is known into that which I imagine...
My mind travels over the fragments of our memory,
Visions reflected in light and shadow.
Man's capacity for both good and evil is always available. With our unrelenting desire to war with each other and among nations, I feel compelled to understand our collective shadow side. This is what propelled me to visit Auschwitz, a place of extraordinary darkness.
Stumbling upon the gas chamber I was desperate to find any light, visible through a doorway, a ceiling, a crack in the wall ... an attempt to counter the darkness that had enveloped me. These photographs speak to the light in the face of that darkness, and are an effort to memorialize all who have died thru out time at the hand of evil.
