Improvisations on a Square plays on the relationships of stability and dynamism in painting and sculpture. While the square suggests stasis, improvisation suggests movement, change, exploration. Some artists chose to work on a square format, others introduced the square theme within their compositions.
The theme and its development gives a musical rhythm to the exhibition within which is contained the variety of styles and approaches of more than 30 artists from abstract to narrative, classical to expressionist, political to humorous.
During the exhibition master improvisers and woodwind virtuosos Tim Price and 'Sweet' Sue Terry will team up for a series of concerts at the gallery entitled “Improvising In and Out of the Box” The concerts will be on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 3pm on May 22, May 29, June 5 and June 12.
