SHEILA HECHT
Through Thick and Thin
Paintings and Mixed Media Constructions
November 4 - November 22, 2003
Reception: Saturday, November 8, 4-6PM
Sheila Hecht's recent paintings and mixed media constructions display a dynamic equilibrium with a fine tension between vibrant brush work and compositional balance. "Through Thick and Thin," suggests both the variegation in painterly textures utilized in her creative process and the spectrum of emotional states evoked by the resulting potent abstractions. The exhibit features works which are not so much paintings and constructions as they are sites of transmission.
Working from a position of acute receptivity to intuitions and sensations, Hecht's response is intense, powerful, voluptuous compositions. Color, often saturated and juxtapositions of hues range from pungent contrasts to subtle blends. Hecht’s signature markings, washes and scrapings point toward the action of the artist’s hand, brush or knife. This energized painting and layering of acrylic pigment produce a sensual density which communicates a provocative aliveness. Yet, careful to hone these abstractions, the artist ultimately creates paintings that are as composed as they are rhythmically hypnotic.
In Hecht's mixed media assemblages, accumulations of the stuff of life and objects found in the urban experience, come together to convey a heightened appreciation of our current stream of visual culture. The works invite interest and discovery. Sly humor and double entendres abound.
The works in the exhibit evoke the pleasures of the painter's intense engagement with artistic materials. Hecht emerges as the instrument through which awareness is gathered and discharged into a visceral distinctive art that is at once both stimulating and contemplative.
