New York, NY - Forum Gallery will exhibit Holly Lane: The Benefits of Pond Wading, and Other Musings. Comprised of intricately crafted paintings presented in altar-like wooden structures, Lane's distinctive and imaginative art blurs the lines between sculpture, painting and conceptual installation. Her elaborately carved three-dimensional frames echo references to Old Masters and her paintings assimilate a Surrealist quality. Lane's works are rich with symbolism, myth and deal with universal issues of life and death.
Lane received her painting degrees at San Jose State University, but she is a self-taught wood carver. She works without assistants, using solitude to enhance the creative process. While planning a new piece, she has specific woods in mind which are selected for their grain, density, and surface. The character of each wood is unique, with each offering its own beguiling tactile pleasure.
A well-read philosophy lover, Lane seeks to stimulate subliminal change in the viewers consciousness, and in turn the viewer becomes aware of the meaning behind Lane's personal iconography. Lane combines images on panels to create a layered narrative. Usually, but not always, the idea for the painting forms first and then the frame condenses around the image.
The atmospheric play of light and shadow in her paintings, combined with the biomorphic look of her landscapes and the luscious depth of space in her skies and horizons, create a merging of physical space with psychological space. These works can be haunting and sometimes whimsical mediations of the environment and feminism.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1954, she now lives in Santa Clara, California. Holly Lane earned her BFA and MFA from San Jose State University, CA. In 2003, Holly Lane had her first solo exhibition at Forum Gallery, New York. She has also had solo exhibitions at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, CT and the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, MT. Her work is included in public collections at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, HI; Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont, TX; Dow Jones & Co., New York, NY; Principal Financial Group, Des Moines, IA, and more than eighty private collections.
Holly Lane: The Benefits of Pond Wading, and Other Musings opens with a reception on April 19 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., and will be on view through May 20, 2006. An illustrated catalogue with commentaries by the artist will accompany the exhibition.
