- Additional Information -

ACE GALLERY NEW YORK IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE A MAJOR INSTALLATION OF JOHN ARMLEDER'S SEMINAL SCULPTURE AND WALL PAINTING.  DATING BACK TO 1967, ARMLEDER'S WALL PAINTINGS ESTABLISH A LINK BETWEEN THE EARLY ENDEAVORS OF FLUXUS AND CONCEPTUAL ART AND WALL PAINTING TODAY.  HIS SCULPTURE EVOKES ELEMENTS OF CONSTRUCTIVISM, NEO-DADA OR MODERN DESIGN FROM THE 1950S.

AS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE ÉCART GROUP IN GENEVA, JOHN ARMLEDER HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS AN ARTIST ADHERING TO THE FLUXUS TRADITION, YET SUCH A DESCRIPTION INADEQUATELY CONVEYS OR ENCOMPASSES HIS ECLECTICISM, EXTENDING BEYOND AN ORIENTATION TOWARDS RANDOMNESS AND CHANCE.

THE VIGOR WITH WHICH ARMLEDER EMBRACES STYLISTIC OR FORMAL APPROACHES RELATES TO THE EXCHANGES BETWEEN SYMBOLIC AND UTILITARIAN VALUE.  IRONICALLY DESCRIBING HIS ARTWORK AS "FURNISHING," ARMLEDER EXPLOITS THE AMBIVALENCE BETWEEN DECORATING AND PAINTING, COMBINING FOUND OBJECTS AND MOTIFS WITH AS MUCH REVERENCE AS REFERENCES TO ART HISTORICAL STYLES.

IN THIS NEW SERIES OF INSTALLATIONS WHICH VEER TOWARDS ALPHAVILLE, ARMLEDER INCORPORATES SCAFFOLDING, A STRUCTURING DEVICE WITHIN THE EXISTING ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURE SERVING AS A SOUND STAGE WITH MONITORS PLAYING SCI-FI B-MOVIES, AND INCLUDE THE AUDIO OVERLAY OF VINTAGE POLYNESIAN RECORDS PLAYING SIMULTANEOUSLY; A WALL OF FLICKERING PINK NEON; A PAINTING COMPRISED OF RETRO KITCHEN TABLES AND FLUORESCENT LIGHTS, AND HIS IDIOSYNCRATIC WALL PAINTINGS IN THE FORM OF DISORIENTED 'TARGETS'.

THE MIRROR DOME INSTALLATIONS UTILIZE 360° CONVEX REFLECTION SURVEILLANCE DOMES AND DISCO BALLS TO CREATE A HIGHLY ACTIVATED VISUAL ENVIRONMENT WITHIN THE GALLERY.  SURFACES CHANGE DEPENDING UPON THE VIEWERS MOVEMENTS.  THE WORK IS RE-CREATED ACCORDING TO THE DIVERSITY OF ITS PARTICIPANTS WHO BECOME INTERACTIVE COMPONENTS, EXISTING IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS PRODUCING AN ONGOING EVER-CHANGING ACTIVE FIELD.  THE INSTALLATIONS ALSO REFER TO PAINTING, PARTICULARLY THE EXCESSIVELY ORNATE AND CURVED SPATIAL FORMS OF THE BAROQUE AND ROCOCO PERIODS.  THESE SELF-REFLEXIVE AND SELF-REFLECTIVE INSTALLATIONS PARODY THE ACT OF SURVEILLANCE IN THE EXTREME.

JOHN ARMLEDER WAS BORN IN 1948 AND LIVES AND WORKS IN GENEVA, SWITZERLAND.
