First Street Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of graphite drawings and chalk pastels by New York artist Suzi Evalenko

This is Ms. Evalenko's third solo exhibition in New York.  In this show of energetic and sensitive line drawings and vibrant pastels, Ms. Evalenko captures and communicates in the most direct fashion the vitality of her subjects -- portraits, figures and floral compositions.

The painter Knox Martin recently described Ms. Evalenko's work as follows:  "Suzi Evalenko's artistic perception begins with an intensely close observation of the subject of her work.  Her art is a direct outgrowth of that observation, unmediated by any preconceived notion of how it should be executed.  Happily absent is any self-conscious intention to create 'art'.  Rather, her work is  'art' in its most serious and honest form precisely because... [it] exhibits her total absorption in the act of painting or drawing and her faithfulness to the needs of the piece itself.  Her work is alive."

In the current exhibition, the energy of the work acts like a magnet, drawing the viewer into each image.

Ms. Evalenko's oil paintings, drawings and pastels have been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and she has received many awards and prizes.  Her work is in the permanent collection of the Art Students League and private collections in the United States and Europe.
